Honestly, that would be a good little machine if you needed something in an environment that had metal work machinery! Don't have to worry about metal shavings shorting anything important, as there aren't any fans! You could also use it as a dumb client to connect to one or more 3D printer.

If you want to try using a low-end system like that as a router, you'd really want to use something Linux-based like OpenWrt or VyOS. BSD-based routers like opnsense and pfSense have higher system requirements and need more CPU power to achieve the same routing speeds as a Linux router would need.

I saw the system they were using back in 2010 at KFC NZ and damn the upgrade from the old system to the current system was a massive upgrade, i swear they hadnt upgraded the system since the 80s prior to the 2010/2011 upgrade Now we are waiting for our next upgrade to our local server, if i remember correctly the server OS we were using prior to 2011 was ME or 2000 based, currently somehow its XP based, i assume at this rate its going to go to Windows Vista or something like it, at least the tills will be replaced from CE to some sort of tablet

Why not change out the CPU? There are better CPU’s that draw less power and will work harder.

Weird that I found this video right after I bought a similar POS computer on eBay for $50 just because I was curious. Mine is just barely new enough to have an HDMI port, which is cool. It's also tiny, no expandability except I saw a SATA port that you can't even access with the enclosure still on.

J1900 is surprisingly good with pfSense. I have a 1Gbps up/down internet fiber connexion and i manage to hit 1Gbps transfers. But my rig has quad intel Pro 1000 Nics.

You can get devices like these fairly cheap nowadays. Kingdel is one brand that comes to mind, some pretty good specs too for fanless PCs.

About 10 years ago i was working with a demolition company we where tearing down a distribution warehouse that had stopped paying rent got kicked from the site and the land owner decided to build a storage unit complex i was tasked one day with smashing the interior office walls down i got quite a shock when i smashed a partition and found a fully intact server room still with machines and servers the company had built a server room next to the office section and to stop yhe noise built a insulated sliding door that was so well intergrated into the wall no one noticed it until i broke through i hot a whole tray of 3rd gen i7 cpus and a bunch of unused 2tb hdd when they cost a small fortune sold most of it kept an i7 and a bunch of drives and used the money i made to build a sick pc

For some reason I've seen the overscreen issue with mint, and ubuntu a few times, and the solution was to fix it in drivers setup, nothing else worked. I'm guessing that either the screen or the amp I was going through didn't return the correct screen into or something like that, but it sure was annoying. Worse, it showed up after an updated and just never went away, which means it was okay, but something in an update fucked it up.

If you take a flat head screw driver and touch the two CMOS battery connectors together will reset like the jumpers.

Another option you can try when the PC doesn't turn on is discharging the capacitors. Without the PC being plugged into the wall, press and hold the power button for 20-40 seconds. This can also be performed on laptops.

or you can get a lenovo tiny m900 (or hp equivalent) for dirt cheap and use even less power.
